Born on 25th February 1970 in Delhi, Deepak Maharaj hails from the illustrious Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Kathak. He was trained in this classical dance form from a tender age by his father, the legendary Kathak maestro, Pt. Birju Maharaj. Deepak’s journey as a performer began when he was just nine years old, and since then, he has captivated audiences worldwide with his exceptional skill and passion for the art.

Over the years, Deepak has performed leading roles in numerous dance dramas choreographed by his father, including renowned productions like Krishnayan, Kumar Sambhav, Katha Raghunath Ki, Rupmati-Bajbhadur, and Shan-e-Awadh. His solo performances and appearances in these productions have garnered critical acclaim in India and internationally, with tours spanning the U.K., U.S.A, Canada, Italy, Dubai, Germany, France, Australia and beyond.

A Legacy of Dance

Deepak Maharaj’s connection to Kathak is deeply rooted in tradition, yet his performances bring a modern sensitivity to the stage. He started performing at the tender age of nine and has since dazzled audiences across the globe with his profound understanding of rhythm, emotion, and storytelling. Deepak has been featured in a variety of leading roles in dance dramas choreographed by his father, such as:

Recent Highlights

Among his many remarkable achievements, Deepak Maharaj has recently shone in the ballet Romeo & Juliet, where he has taken on the iconic role of Romeo. This modern ballet has been showcased in multiple cities in India, adding a new chapter to his ever-expanding repertoire.

Awards

Over his illustrious career, Deepak Maharaj has been conferred with numerous prestigious awards, including:
Sringar Mani Award (1996) by Sur Sringar Academy
Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award (2006)
Yuva Darpan Award (2007) for his contributions to Kathak on International Youth Day
Nritya Bhushan Award (2015) from Tarana Art & Music Academy.
In addition, he is certified as an ‘A’ grade artist by Doordarshan Kendra, New Delhi.

Beyond the Stage: Teaching & Sharing Knowledge

Deepak is not only a performer but also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has conducted numerous workshops, including a recent one-week program organized by the Kathak Kendra at Siliguri, and frequently gives lecture demonstrations across India as part of SPIC-MACAY‘s mission to preserve and promote Indian classical arts.
